Chicago firefighters rescued a window washer who was hanging from the side of a 58-story building Tuesday after his scaffold malfunctioned.

The worker became stranded after noon on a high-rise in the city's River North neighborhood, the department said. He became stuck outside the building's 53rd floor when one of the ropes keeping him suspended in the air snapped, WGN-TV reports.

Streets around the high-rise were shut down as crews worked quickly in a steady rain. Determining that the scaffold couldn't be repaired mid-air and with another rope close to breaking, firefighters dropped a line to the window washer, according to WMAQ-TV

Once secured, the worker was able to safely scale up the side of the high-rise to the roof, the department stated in an online update.
