DETROIT, MI, AUG. 26, 2011 – Companies from the Fourth Battalion responded to a reported commercial building fire. Ladder 25 reported an occupied one-story hardware store with heavy fire in the rear. Chief 4 assumed incident command and requested a Hazmat Level 1 response due to paint and other chemicals in the building Chief 4 then ordered all companies to stay out of the building and requested a second alarm. The senior chief, after conducting a size-up, ordered all companies to a defensive mode and requested a third alarm. The fire was fought in defensive mode using one platform, one water tower and several handlines and was brought under control after more than two hours.

CHICAGO, IL, SEPT. 11, 2011 – Around shift change, a 2-11 alarm ripped through a one-story commercial building attached to an auto repair garage with a truss roof. The fire eventually burned through the roof and several collapses occurred.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA, SEPT. 23, 2011 – A Red Flag Warning was issued by the National Weather Service for the northern deserts of Los Angeles County and the deserts of Kern County. Numerous dry lightning strikes along Highway 138 in the Neenach area sparked a series of fires in grass and brush that required two separate Grass B responses. Quebec Super Scoopers and several helicopters were summoned to halt the fires near the California Poppy Reserve in Los Angeles County.
