For the 28th year, the career fire service takes to the pages of Firehouse® Magazine to share and compare statistics about company and department activity levels, funding, staffing and pay. A total of 268 fire departments took part in this year’s survey, representing 48 states, the District of Columbia and six Canadian provinces. The departments represented in this latest survey protect 83,037,682 people, and they have budgets totaling nearly $14 billion (budgets are listed in millions of dollars). They provide this service with 3,919 engine companies, 1,405 ladder companies, 2,040 ambulances and numerous other specialized units. They responded to 2,151,986 fire calls, 7,254,067 EMS calls and 10,720,815 total calls last year. In Part 1 of the 2008 National Run Survey, published in our June 2009 issue, the profile for the Elizabeth City, NC, Fire Department was mistakenly listed as Elizabeth, NJ.
