CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Chief Thomas Carr received a unanimous nod from the Charleston city council here Tuesday night to take over the fire department.
Carr, who heads the Montgomery County, MD Department of Fire and Rescue Services, will take the white helmet in Charleston next month.
He replaces longtime Chief Rusty Thomas who stepped down on the eve of a controversial report of his handling of a furniture store fire that claimed nine of his firefighters.
Carr spoke with many of the fallen firefighters' families this past weekend following the National Fallen Firefighters' Memorial Service. He also had a chance to chat with some of the men who will be working with him.
