President Bush issued a statement praising the firefighters for their skill, courage and commitment to Charleston.

Mourners have left flowers and cards in front of fire stations and monuments in Charleston after nine firefighters died in a blaze in a furniture warehouse.

Governor Mark Sanford ordered flags lowered to half-staff on state buildings. He says the deaths are a reminder of the dangers firefighters face.

An American flag was draped over a sign near the store. Nine white crosses, each with an American flag, were placed in front of the store by firefighters who huddled briefly in prayer.

One shopping plaza's marquee read, "God bless our Charleston fire fighters."
