One person has been confirmed dead and another injured as firefighters are fighting a major fire at The Devon, a high-rise condominium building in Wilmington.

The fire was reported around 1:45 p.m. and smoke could be seen pouring out of the top floors of the building. The fire had not been declared under control as of 2:55 p.m.

The fire started on the south side of the 11th floor of the apartments at 2401 Pennsylvania Ave., according to Deputy Chief William Patrick of the Wilmington Fire Department.

It then spread to the three floors above that as firefighters worked to bring it under control and evacuate residents down a stairwell on the north side of the building.

Patrick said some residents were evaluated for smoke inhalation at a staging area on the 10th floor of the building.

City officials confirmed one person, found in a room on the 11th floor, was dead.
