The lightning-sparked fire, which grew from about 10 acres to 1,100 acres on Sunday, was burning on Ute Mountain Ute land and threatening several gas wells, fire information officer Pam Wilson said.
The exact number of wells was unknown. Workers were trying to shut the wells down.
No homes were immediately threatened, Wilson said, but fire managers ordered about 10 fire structure-protection engines in case the fire shifted north and threatened structures there.
Five engines, nine smokejumpers, a heavy air tanker, a single-engine tanker and two helicopters were on scene. More crews were set to arrive Monday.
The fire was burning in pinon and juniper, and smoke could be seen in Farmington, N.M.
The fire was about 1 1/2 miles north of the New Mexico border and about five miles west of Colorado 140.
Temperatures early this week in the Four Corners area were expected to be in the 80s during the day, falling to the 40s at night.
