SUMMARY: When a fire is burning in the Structural Wildland Interzone, water is a structural firefighter's most important tool. Engine companies transport and deliver water when and where it is needed. Class A-foam concentrates can be added to water expanding and enhancing the firefighting properties of this versatile important tool. Engine company operations in the SWI fire arena are very different than they are during the familiar structural fire scenario. The following article is a "back to the basics" fundamental training guide. I am not "reinventing the wheel" with this. This is a compilation of some of what I have read, studied, have been trained in and have experienced in my 29 years in the fire services. A number of points are repeated in this article. It is intentional because those points are important. One of the most important aspects of any fireground operation is safety, safety for yourself, your fellow firefighter(s) and for those other people that are or could be in harm's way. What else could possibly be more important?
