Firefighters in Clackamas County withdrew from a burning home Friday night during what officials called a "perplexing scene."
Units responded after multipler callers reported a home on fire on SE McKinley. Callers reported that people were still inside the home.
"Firefighters did aggressive maneuvers to enter the structure without a hose line to search for victims," according to a statement from the fire department.
As crews were operating, a male ran past firefighters and forcibly entered an adjancet home.
"The alert chief requested police back-up for the fleeing subject," the statement read.
During initial firefighting efforts, the Clackamas County Sherriff's Office established a perimeter. Firefighters and their apparatus were removed to safety.
One pumper was left at the scene to help shield SWAT crews as they assesed the situation.
Officers were able to arrest the man and officials are currently investigating the fire, which officials called "highly suspicious."
The home was destroyed.
