Recent fires from around the country

Cliffside Park, N.J., Feb. 27, 2016—Fire started in the rear kitchen area of a delicatessen in a one- and two-story structure on Anderson Avenue. Firefighters knocked down the visible fire in the rear area, but flames had already extended up walls and into the cockloft. Fire threatened an adjacent structure on the B side—a three-story mixed occupancy structure with a hardware store on the ground floor with apartments above. Operations were hampered by overhead power lines and freezing temperatures.

Bradford Township, PA, April 7, 2016—A Bradford Township volunteer firefighter operates a 1¾-inch hoseline on a fully involved pickup truck. Magnesium explodes as water hits vehicle components. Fifteen firefighters responded with two engines down a dirt road, a half-mile into the woods. Firefighters were on the scene for one hour.

Chicago, April 4, 2016—Firefighters responded to a still and box alarm in a one-story building with a truss roof. Heavy, gusting winds changed directions, intensified the fire and hampered fireground operations. There were vacant lots on both sides of the fire building, so the only exposure problem was to alley garages in the rear. Two tower ladders and a Snorkel were used on scene, as well as numerous handlines.
