One problem facing organizations today is that of Leadership.  True leadership.  Far too many people are placed into positions of leadership, that do not demonstrate leadership characteristics.  They are merely managers (if that).  Some of these people have gotten into their position simply because they have been with the organization for an extended period of time.  Most have gotten there simply because they were the right person's "buddy".

In his landmark book, Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill lists eleven attributes of leadership.

1.     Unwavering courage.

2.     Self-control.

3.     A keen sense of justice.

4.    Definiteness of decision.

5.     Definiteness of plans.

6.     The habit of doing more than paid for.

7.     A pleasing personality.

8.     Sympathy and understanding.

9.     Mastery of detail.

10.     Willingness to assume full responsibility.

11.     Cooperation.

Is the head of your department/organization a true leader? Which of these areas are you strongest in? In which do you need more work?

"There are two forms of leadership.  The first, and by far the most effective, is Leadership by Consent of, and with the sympathy of the followers.  The second Leadership by Force, without the consent and sympathy of the followers." - Napoleon Hill
