A visit to the Iowa Firefighter's Memorial

April 29, 2010
Sparkles, Tango and I just returned from a 24 day Midwest fire safety tour. Along the way, we had the opportunity to participate in some very fun and educational fire safety programs and activities in Illinois, Wisconsin and Nebraska.
While traveling from Chicago to Omaha, we stumbled upon the Iowa Fallen Firefighter's Memorial in Coralville, Iowa. It was truly a very serene place and I could not help but be struck by the beauty of the site.
Upon visiting the website, I learned more about this stunning memorial. The website noted that Iowa was the first state to have a firefighter memorial and visitor center echoing Iowa's national leadership in fire service training and safety education. The webpage also noted that Iowa has 2O,OOO firefighters and 871 fire departments who serve 3 million Iowans and respond to more than 4O,OOO emergency calls.
As I walked around the site, it made me want to work even harder to help share with others on the Playing it Safe blog, ways in which we can all help keep children and their caregivers fire safe through fire safe programming and activities. In doing so, together, we can help firefighters from across the country who risk their lives, safe.
Do you have a fire safety program or idea that you would like to share? Please let us hear about it.
