Detroit Crews Battle 16 Suspicious Fires Overnight

June 25, 2012
Firefighters battled the suspicious blazes on the east side of the city Monday night.

Detroit fire crews spent the overnight hours fighting about 16 fires on the east side including one that injured a firefighter.

"It has been real busy," Captain Pat McNulty said.

The firefighter was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, treated and released for minor injuries, McNulty said. The injury was to his head.

The injury happened during 2-alarm fire involving a church and house in the 2200 block of Chene, Detroit fire spokesman Lt. Gerod Funderberg. That call came in just before 1:30 a.m. today.

The fires, many believed to be arson but still under investigation, broke out in a close proximity on the city's east side and most involved houses, officials said.
