The Dallas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb (DSC) is an annual remembrance that uniquely honors fallen first responders while supporting the families that are left behind. 2014 marks the 4th year for this event. Choreographed around the events of September 11th 2001, the climb incorporates incredible symbolism in an intensely physical setting. The event begins with an opening ceremony clad in traditional fire and police memorial service elements. The climb begins after a moment of silence at 8:46 am, marking the time Flight 11 hit the North Tower. 343 firefighters and 70 police officers then begin the trek to the top (110 floors -- the height of the former World Trade Center Twin Towers); each carrying the name, picture and accountability tag of a firefighter or police officer who was killed at Ground Zero on 9/11/01. Local fallen public safety officers are acknowledged and honored as well. Once finished participants place the name of the individual they climbed for on a board, symbolizing that the fallen have completed their journey to the top. While the climb is going on inside the building, there are several engaging activities and vendor areas both inside and outside the building. The event is family oriented and open to the public. Once all the participants have completed the climb, a social mixer is planned to follow.
