What is the Fight for Air Climb?
Unlike a traditional run/walk, your team will be challenged to climb the 528 stairs/24 floors of One Monarch Place in Springfield, MA. As part of the Firefighter Challenge, teams compete against other fire departments to win the top prize â€" a trophy recognizing the team with the combined fastest time. The winning team receives bragging rights and becomes the year's keeper of the trophy. Each year, the trophy will travel to the winning team’s firehouse for display.

Why Climb?

  • Showcase the overall fitness of your company and your training skills which require strong lungs
  • Show support for fellow firefighters who suffer from lung disease
  • Raise funds to increase awareness and research dollars dedicated to fighting lung disease

Firefighters have an increased risk of lung disease due to exposure to chemicals, gases, particulates and other substances, which can cause short-term and long-term lung damage. Harmful chemicals can cause short-term acute effects such as hypoxemia due to smoke inhalation, a decrease in overall lung function, and a decrease in airway responsiveness. Breathing in dust when fighting fires in older homes containing building materials made of asbestos can put firefighters at risk for lung disorders including asbestosis and mesothelioma

Through research, education and advocacy, the American Lung Association is committed to saving lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. We hope your firehouse will join us for this 7th annual event and competition to honor those who have served and protected our communities and to show your commitment to healthy lungs and clean air. Create a team of firefighters and compete together! Then join us as we celebrate your accomplishments at the after party immediately following the event.
