Philly Crews Rescue Five From Apartment Fire

Philadelphia firefighters rescued five people from the fourth floor of a burning apartment.
Philadelphia firefighters rescued five people from the fourth floor of a burning apartment fire Thursday night, according to WTXF-TV.

Crews responded to the fire on the corner of 45th and Walnut streets shortly before 7 p.m.

Firefighters used ladders to rescue the residents from the fourth floor, Deputy Fire Chief Michael Wahl told the news station.

One person was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and was listed in stable condition.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital for treatment for a cut on his hand.

The fire was declared under control in close to an hour and as many as 30 people were displaced by the blaze that affected 15 units, destroying 12.

Fire officials lauded the actions of the crews.

"It was unbelievable," Battalion Chief Mike Kane said. "For the amount of fire there was, and the number of rescues that were happening, these guys did an outstanding job."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
