Spooner volunteer firefighter Philip Neubich died of a heart attack hours after responding to a residential gas leak.

A veteran firefighter in a small community in northwestern Wisconsin has died following a response.

The U.S. Fire Administration on Thursday announced the line-of-duty death of 69-year-old Spooner volunteer firefighter Philip H. Neubich, who was a 38-year veteran of the fire service.

Late on Tuesday evening, Neubich responded to his fire station when the department was paged out for a reported gas leak inside a residence. Several hours later at around 6:15 a.m. Wednesday morning, Neubich was found unresponsive at home by his wife.

Local EMS crews responded, but resuscitation efforts failed and Neubich was pronounced dead of an apparent heart attack.

Spooner is a small city of less than 3,000 people in Washburn County about 110 miles northeast of Minneapolis.
