Todd Lanthrip, a 53-year-old acting captain with the Mathiston Volunteer Fire Department, suffered the medical emergency at home after he had responded to a car crash.

An acting captain for a Mississippi fire department suffered a heart attack at home and died after he had responded to a car accident the night before, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Mathiston Capt. Todd Lanthrip had been working scene safety at the crash site Wednesday night, the federal agency announced Tuesday. Lanthrip went home after the accident, and at about 1:30 a.m., he had a heart attack and became unresponsive.

Lanthrip's wife, as well as first responders, tried to resuscitate him, but their efforts were unsuccessful, the USFA added.

A funeral for Lanthrip was held Monday, an online post by the Mathison Volunteer Fire Department stated.
