An Alabama firefighter who died following a training exercise has been identified.

Springville firefighter-paramedic Jared Echols, 35, became ill Monday while running a recruit training drill at the Anniston Regional Training Center, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

During the Evolution and Exercise training, he began experiencing difficulty, Matt Russell, the executive director of the Alabama Fire College told The Trussville Tribune.

Echols was taken to Regional Medical Center in Anniston, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy will be performed at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital to determine the cause of death, the Tribune reports.

Russell, as well as Springville Fire Chief Richard Harvey, have said they believe Echol's death was medical-related. The state fire marshal's office is investigating.

Along with being a firefighter-paramedic with the Springville Fire Department, Echols also was an active member of the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department in Springville, the U.S. Fire Administration stated.
