On Jan. 1, 2011, the Chicago, IL, Fire Department had its first extra alarm of the year on the Southwest Side. The first-arriving companies, Engine 99 and Truck 48, rescued two occupants by ladder. A firefighter from Squad 1 backs down a ladder after the second floor flashed over.

Dedication: This month’s Firehouse® is dedicated to Firefighter Michel Baik, 49, and Lieutenant Steven John Velasquez, 40, both of the Bridgeport, CT, Fire Department; Firefighter David Sullivan, 70, of the Otis, MA, Fire Department; and Fire Chief Posey Dillon, 59, and Firefighter William Altice, 67, of the Rocky Mount, VA, Fire Department, who died in the line of duty, July 2010.
