HOUSTON --

A two-alarm fire broke out Friday in a southwest Harris County apartment complex.

Firefighters were sent to the Green Trail apartments, 1111 Houghton Road at Kingsland Boulevard, shortly after 4 a.m.

A second alarm was pulled for manpower.

Resident Beth Hays said she heard an explosion, and she and her husband rushed to get out.

"(We) put on some clothes and came out to look and see if we could help or find out what's happening," she said.

Firefighters said the blaze started in a downstairs unit and quickly spread throughout the building, but they managed to stop it from jumping to other buildings.

"We did have a large amount of fire on arrival, which did make it a challenge," West I-10 Fire Chief James Dillan said.

Fourteen units were damaged by fire, and four more received smoke and water damage, fire officials said.

Two residents were injured. The woman living in the apartment where the fire started suffered some burns and smoke inhalation. She was taken to a hospital.

Another resident received scrapes and scratches. She was treated at the scene.

The cause is not yet known and under investigation.
