La. Crews Battle 4-Alarmer at Apartment Complex

METAIRIE, La. -- Firefighters in Jefferson Parish responded to an apartment complex fire that was upgraded to four alarms late Sunday night. The fire began at the Chateau Napoleon Apartments at 3701 West Napoleon Avenue at about 9 p.m. and quickly became a three-alarm blaze. It was still burning hours later -- upgraded to a fourth alarm. Dozens of firefighters worked to control the flames. The glow of the fire could be seen from buildings miles away in downtown New Orleans.

Firefighters in Jefferson Parish responded to an apartment complex fire that was upgraded to four alarms late Sunday night.

The fire began at the Chateau Napoleon Apartments at 3701 West Napoleon Avenue at about 9 p.m. and quickly became a three-alarm blaze. It was still burning hours later -- upgraded to a fourth alarm.

Dozens of firefighters worked to control the flames.

The glow of the fire could be seen from buildings miles away in downtown New Orleans.

Witnesses told WDSU that two people jumped from the third floor to escape the flames. Initial reports indicated only minor injuries. Two people were rescued from the second floor of one of the burning buildings.

The American Red Cross Southeast Louisiana Chapter was on scene to help residents displaced by the fire. A shelter for affected families was established at Cleary Playground on Civic Street.

Investigators were working to pinpoint the cause of the fire.
