W.Va. Chief on Leave, Dept. Deficiencies Explored

Weirton's Fire Chief, David Lashhorn, is on paid leave, according to Mayor George Kondik.

Lashhorn was recently cleared of allegations that he threatened the safety of city firefighters.

City officials said the issue was resolved following a closed-door hearing in July.

NEWS9 was told Lashhorn remains on leave, but city officials would not say why or for how long.

City Attorney Vince Gurrera, told NEWS9 Lashhorn still holds the office of fire chief.

On Monday, Weirton City Council voted to approve a resolution to authorize the city manager and city attorney to create and advertise a request for proposal for professional consultation for the fire department.

The resolution called for an independent examination of the deficiencies, policies and other operations concerning the fire department.

Council moved to have it completed by Dec. 31.
