OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --

Overland Park firefighters are investigating what started a two-alarm fire at the Evergreen Apartments in the 9200 block of West 79th Street early Monday morning.

Firefighters said they were called to the complex about 12:30 a.m. and saw flames coming from the roof of a two-story apartment building.

Residents told arriving crews that there were possibly still people inside. Authorities said firefighters immediately went in to search for other residents, but were forced out because of a roof collapse.

Fire crews were able to stop the fire between two firewalls and save the majority of the building. The fire was under control at 3:15 a.m. No one was hurt.

At least six units were destroyed by the fire, affecting about 50 residents. The Red Cross is helping them.
