KITTANNING, Pa. --

Firefighters rescued a woman and her pets from an apartment blaze in Kittanning on Sunday.

The blaze broke out just before 7:30 a.m. on North McKean Street, officials said.

Ray Finger was inside the apartment building and smelled smoke when he woke up.

"I got up and walked to the kitchen. Nobody's cooking. I walked back to the back bedroom, and that's when I saw smoke coming up," Finger said. "We started throwing buckets of water on it, and it wouldn't go out. I went around and tried to get everybody up and called 911."

Officials said the fire affected two units. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
