DETROIT --

A Detroit fire chief was rushed to the hospital Thursday when his SUV crashed en route to a blaze on the city's east side.

Detroit Fire Department Chief 8 James Houseworth crashed with a silver minivan on Seven Mile Road at Sherwood Road.

Other fire officials at the scene said Houseworth was not seriously hurt, but was put in a neck brace and taken to the hospital as a precaution. The driver of the minivan was also taken to the hospital. Her condition was not immediately known.

Police have not said what caused the crash.

Houseworth was responding to a fire at L & M Container Corp., which is on Van Dyke Avenue near McNichols Road. A fire inside pallet dryer got out of control and spread to a truck inside the building.

Fire officials said the building housed several wooden pallets, which helped fuel the blaze.
