San Benito Firefighter Joe Ramos had just finished a 24-hour shift on Thursday morning, but didn't hesitate to jump into action when he saw smoke coming from a Harlingen house during his drive home.

Ramos parked his car and ran toward the smoke. A woman outside told him that her elderly grandfather was trapped inside.

"Obviously, there was something wrong," Ramos told KGBT-TV. "So I ran over there and the lady kept saying he's still in there."

He said that they could hear moaning inside and they called him to see if he could try to make his way out when suddenly they no longer heard anything.

He turned around to see Harlingen police officers who responded and had two of them help him.

They were able to pull the unconscious man through a window to safety.

Ramos and the two officers were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but have all since been released.

The elderly man continues to recover at the hospital.
