Louisiana Firefighter Dies After Battling Blaze

A Livingston Parish firefighter died Saturday morning after experiencing a medical emergency shortly after battling a house fire.Firefighter Scott Osenenko, 45, with Fire Protection District No. 4 responded to 9673 Florida Boulevard around 4 a.m. on the first arriving engine and worked for nearly 20 minutes removing people from danger and suppressing the fire, according to a news release from the Louisiana State Fire Marshal.

Firefighter Scott Osenenko, 45, with Fire Protection District No. 4 responded to 9673 Florida Boulevard around 4 a.m. on the first arriving engine and worked for nearly 20 minutes removing people from danger and suppressing the fire, according to a news release from the Louisiana State Fire Marshal.

Shortly after he exited the building he experienced cardiac distress and was treated and transported to Ochsner Medical Center in Baton Rouge.

He was he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:15 a.m. as the result of injuries he sustained.

Osenenko leaves behind two children and served as a volunteer firefighter for nearly a year.

"Scott was a model firefighter, he was always eager to learn and train," Fire Chief James Wascom said in a statement. "All he was trying to do was save lives and serve our community this morning, now he is gone."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and an electric space heater is currently being evaluated as a possible cause.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
