BALTIMORE --

Fire investigators in Charles County are looking into the cause of a fire that killed a 5-year-old boy and critically injured his 2-year-old sister.

Crews were called to a single-family home in the Strawberry Hills Estates section of Arbor Lane in Bryans Road around 6 a.m. Thursday.

Firefighters found Shevon Conley, 31, standing outside the home with only a few of her six children.

She told rescue workers that landscapers helped her get a ladder to the rear of the home to get a 3-year-old girl out, but two other children were still inside.

Crews said the 2-year-old girl was rescued from the home by firefighters and was suffering from severe smoke inhalation. She was taken to Civista Medical Center in critical condition.

Firefighters then found the body of the 5-year-old boy in the bedroom, where they believe the fire started. Most of the fire was contained to that room, officials said.

Investigators said there didn't appear to be any working smoke alarms in the home.

They're still investigating a cause.
