GREENWOOD, Ark. --

Will Dawson with Greenwood Police said Calvary Temple United Pentecostal Church on Ware Road was burned by a fire Wednesday afternoon.

Dawson said people were inside when it happened, but said he believes everyone made it out safely.

Firefighters think the blaze was started by a lightning strike, as thunderstorms were moving through the area when the fire broke out.

No one was in the church when the fire started, officials said. Some vehicles were parked outside the church, and passersby called the police, fearing people were inside. Greenwood police spoke to the pastor of the church who said he and the other members are at a church camp three hours away.

The sanctuary of the church was destroyed. A new addition to the church is still standing but firefighters are cutting holes in the roof to keep fire from spreading to it.
