TIJUANA, Mexico --

At least 25 people were injured after an explosion at a Chinese restaurant in eastern Tijuana on Sunday, according to 10News' media partner The San Diego Union-Tribune.

According to the Union-Tribune, the explosion at the restaurant in Tijuana's El Florido section was apparently caused by a gas leak.

Civil protection authorities told the Union-Tribune that firefighters at a nearby station received reports of a strong odor of gas just after 9 a.m.

By the time firefighters arrived, the blast had already occurred.

Authorities said they believe no one was inside the restaurant, which was closed.

However, they said the explosion was powerful enough to level the building and to cause damage at an open-air market next door to the restaurant.

Rescue workers continued to search through the rubble to check for possible victims, the Union-Tribune reported.
