Firefighter David Goins, 47, was found dead by the crew in a spotter plane with the Texas Forest Service that was investigating smoke in the area.

“We're not sure if smoke got him and he went down or what," Firefighter Derrick Clark told The Daily News. "He was burned though."

An autopsy has been ordered and his death is under investigation by the Angelina County Sheriff's Office.

Goins was a volunteer with Huntington since 1988, holding the titles of lieutenant, captain and assistant chief.
