HOUSTON --

The Houston Fire Department said four people had to be rescued from an apartment complex on Woodway near Voss after an early-morning fire.

The district fire chief said the fire began inside the stairwell of the complex, which leads to four different units. People inside two of the units were able to make it out on their own. Two adults inside a downstairs unit as well as an adult and child inside an upstairs unit were rescued by firefighters. HFD said they were being treated for smoke inhalation but were expected to be OK.

The district fire chief said it appeared the fire was intentionally set inside the stairwell by someone who threw some sort of flammable liquid and lit it on fire. He said the fire was very similar to a few other fires HFD has responded to in the area over the past several months.

HFD is investigating to see who is responsible for these fires.
