SEABROOK, Texas --

Several families lost their homes in a four-alarm apartment fire.

The fire broke out at the La Maison Apartments in the 1900 block of Lakeside Drive near Nasa Road 1 in Seabrook about 9:45 p.m.

Residents sat on the street as Seabrook volunteer firefighters battled the 20- to 30-foot-high flames that devoured one building. The entire apartment complex was evacuated in case the fire spread.

"I stepped outside and I see flames coming over the top of building 8 and building 9," resident Rachel Marie Waldroup said. "I step out and go around the corner, and next thing I see is all flames. You could literally feel the heat coming off the flames, consuming the entire building."

The fire was put out about 11:15 p.m., but the building that contained 16 units was destroyed. About 30 people lived in the building, and all but three units were occupied.

Many of the affected residents stayed with friends or family, but a shelter was opened at the Seabrook Community Center for those who needed it.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
