A Southfield firefighter had a close call Thursday morning after he fell through the floor of a burning home.

Firefighter Curtis Nelson took a few steps into the home before the floor caved in, sending him 10 feet down into the basement, according to WJBK-TV

"I'm OK," he told the news station. "I had my guys pull me out."

Fire Chief Peter Healy said that Nelson noticed flames while in the basement after he fell and had his fellow firefighters pass down a hose so he could douse the flames before he was pulled up to safety.

Nelson was evaluated at the scene and was uninjured.

Crews responded the fire at approximately 8:20 a.m. at a home at the corner of Bloomfield Drive and Glenwood in Lathrup Village.

Fire officials said the house was severely damaged, but should be able to be salvaged.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
