Chief Bill Sponable was sworn in as the district's third chief 15 months ago. District spokesman Pebbles said this evaluation is not the chief's annual review. "I don't believe it is," said Pebbles. SACRAMENTO, Calif. --

The Sacramento Metro Fire District Board of Directors will meet in closed session on Thursday to discuss the fire chief's evaluation and contract.

Chief Bill Sponable was sworn in as the district's third chief 15 months ago.

District spokesman Pebbles said this evaluation is not the chief's annual review.

"I don't believe it is," said Pebbles. "His annual performance is up annually, and his contract started in January. We're in March, so I don't believe this is his report."

The board must report any action it takes in closed session.

Sponable is a 36 year veteran of the fire service. He has been a firefighter, captain, engineer and chief financial officer for the district.

Sponable is paid $194,000 a year according to his employment contract.

If Sponable resigns, the district would have to pay him salary and benefits he has accrued. However, if the board fires him without cause, the district would have to pay the chief twelve months of severance.

Sponable would not comment today, neither would the Sacramento Metro fire board.

The local union did not return a call from KCRA 3.
