Five St. Louis Fire Department emergency vehicles crashed Wednesday morning while responding to a massive wreck on an icy interstate.

The wreck on I-64 near downtown involved at least 26 vehicles and left 21 injured, including one seriously, according to KSDK-TV.

It is not known if the injured included emergency personnel.

A fire department official told the station that first crews realized they had a mass casualty incident, and called for additional resources.

Some of those responding to the call also wrecked, he said.

It will be hours before the highway is cleared of the wreckage.
