SOUTHBURY, Conn. --

Firefighters from several towns responded to an early-morning fire that destroyed a Southbury strip mall.

Fire crews responded just after 1 a.m. Friday after a passing police officer saw flames coming from The Commons shopping center on South Main Street.

The blaze was under control within an hour, but not before the entire shopping center was destroyed. Some 12 to 14 businesses operate in the shopping area, including doctors offices, jewelry stores and a driving school.

It is not clear as to where the fire began, or what the cause was. The state Fire Marshal's Office is assisting local authorities with their investigation.

South Main Street remains closed at this time between Old Field Road and Depot Hill Road.
