FORESTVILLE, Md. -- A truck crashed into a Beltway overpass Tuesday night, severely damaging the bridge and threatening the Wednesday morning commute.

The crash happened just after 11 p.m. Tuesday. A tractor trailer hit several cars, then struck a bridge embankment at the D'Arcy Road overpass. Part of the underside of the bridge was damaged by the crash and subsequent fire. The overpass will remain closed until a safety inspection can be done.

The crash closed the Inner Loop. Maryland State Police reopened the far left lane and shoulder of the roadway shortly before 4:00 a.m. A second lane reopened around 5:30 a.m. Maryland State Highways Administration officials opened a third lane of traffic around 7:15 a.m. Right now there is no word on when the roadway will completely reopen.

Prince George's County Fire & EMS spokesman Mark Brady tells 9NEWS NOW paramedics treated at least one injured person. The driver of the tractor-trailer is unaccounted for and presumed to be dead. A second person may have also been in the truck.
