CYPRESS, Texas --

A huge barn fire claimed the lives of six horses in Northwest Harris County.

By the time the Cypress Creek Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the Ravensway Saracen Park Stables early Saturday morning, the barn was already engulfed in flames.

"It was heart-wrenching," horse owner Lewis Hill said. "When I pulled up, there was fire coming from every window. The flames were about 30 feet high."

Hill owned some of the horses that were in that barn.

"My daughter came home for the weekend from college," Hill said. "We had the horses for nine years. She rode them Saturday and now they are gone."

Fifty firefighters battled the flames, but Fire Marshal Joey Dockins from the Cypress Creek Volunteer Fire Department said the flames were just too intense.

"We arrived and you could hear the horses," Dockins said. "One of our guys ran in there and rescued two, but that was it. The flames were too intense."

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
