LAUREL, Md. --

A Howard County fire engine collided Wednesday evening with a minivan in Laurel, sending two people to the hospital, police said.

Howard County police released a statement stating that the collision occurred shortly before 6 p.m. on Route 216 west of All Saints Road.

Police said the fire engine was traveling in the left lane with lights and sirens operating. Police said the fire engine driver tried to swerve to the right to avoid a disabled vehicle, but lost control and collided with the minivan stopped at a traffic signal.

Two people inside the minivan were injured and taken to Howard County General Hospital with unknown injuries.

The minivan's driver, Dayana Sujeidi Jimenez, 27, was listed in stable condition. A passenger, Amelia Ruda, 47, was also listed in stable condition.

A front-seat passenger was not injured. None of the fire department personnel were injured.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the fire engine was driving too fast for the weather conditions. The incident remained under investigation.
