Members of the New York Mets baseball team spent Thursday at the FDNY's academy, learning the basics of firefighting.

Pitchers Mike Pelfrey, R.A. Dickey, Bobby Parnell and Dillon Gee, along with Mets COO Jeff Wilpon donned official bunker gear before starting their training.

They spent several hours going through exercises including extinguishing fire in the high-rise simulator and car-fire simulator, being lowered down the side of a six-story building and climbing an aerial ladder, according to a department press release.

"I have a whole new respect for the profession now," Dickey said. "You really have no idea how difficult their training is and what they go through for their jobs."

Parnell and Gee were already familiar with firefighting, as both of their fathers are in the fire service.

Parnell's father Robert Parnell Sr., who was in attendance, is the chief of the Salisbury, N.C. Fire Department while Gee's father, Kevin, works for the Fort Worth, Texas Fire Department.

"They gave us the easy version of their training," Pelfrey said. "It was an once-in-a-lifetime experience that makes me appreciate, even more, the work FDNY firefighters do every day."
