Two French firefighters died after being electrocuted while battling a suspicious fire close to midnight on Wednesday, according to Le Figaro.

The blaze occurred at a car dealership located north of Nantes.

Sgt. Chistopher Augerau, 31, and Cpl. Jean-Charles Sorin, 25, from Saint-Herbian Fire and Rescue were killed after their ladder came in contact with power lines.

A department spokesperson told the newspaper that thick smoke prevented visibility and attempts to resuscitate the firefighters were unsuccessful.

The fire was discovered by a security guard shortly after an intruder triggered an alarm and jumped the fence to flee the scene.

Funeral arrangements for the two firefighters are pending.
