WAMPUM, Pa. --

Three people were rescued Saturday night after they lost their boat in the Beaver River, firefighters said.

The rescue happened in Wampum, Lawrence County.

Emergency workers said there were four adults and one child in the boat. They lost the boat during a heavy rainstorm.

Officials said a man, woman, and child held onto a railroad pier until they were rescued.

"We put on life vests and crossed the river with a throw-rope line and brought each individual back one at a time," said Wampum Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Edinger. "They appeared to have been fishing. They were just kind of all huddled together, standing underneath the pier."
