WATERBURY, Conn. --

Officials from the Waterbury Fire Department say Lt. Bruce Bachinsky had a heart attack and died while riding his bike on Tuesday afternoon.

Bachinsky was found along the side of a road in Waterbury by a passer-by.

Officials said he had responded to at least two calls last night but were unsure if they were fire or medical related.

The fire chief said because Bachinsky responded to calls within 24 hours of his death, the department is classifying it as in the line of duty because of the stresses that an emergency response entails, according to Waterbury Fire Chief Michael Maglione.

Bachinsky had been with the Waterbury Fire Department since 1998 and had been promoted to lieutenant less than two years ago.

Bachinsky leaves behind a wife and two children.
