BOSTON --

Two Lynn firefighters suffered injuries Thursday while battling a fire that destroyed a home.

The fire started at about 10 a .m. at 18 Clayton St. The homeowner, Christine Ferguson, and her boyfriend had left the home for a doctor's appointment minutes before the fire started.

"The whole house was engulfed right away," neighbor P.J. Johansen said. "Flames were shooting out the first floor. Smoke was coming out of the second floor and the roof."

One firefighter suffered a heat-related injury and the other suffered an injury to his shoulder. Both were taken to a local hospital, where their injuries were described as minor.

"The place was fully involved when we pulled up. With it being so hot, we were rotating crews, and even now, the heat is catching up to us," Lynn Fire Department Chief Dennis Carmody said.

Ferguson has owned the home for more than 20 years, and officials said it was a total loss.
