PORT ORANGE, Fla. --

Police in Port Orange said a firefighter engaged in a scheme to defraud residents and steal prescription medication.

Police said Fireman Michael Michaud was at 12:15 p.m. at his home on charges of burglary and scheming.

Michaud, 37, is accused of visiting residents while off-duty, under the guise of conducting a follow-up investigation, to steal their pills.

Police said one resident reported that her son's prescription medication had been stolen from her Port Orange home. She said fire rescue had answered her call for help when she asked for assistance with her 37-year-old son, but Michaud returned days later to "complete an inventory of prescription medication, when in fact he did steal them," police said.

Police said Michaud conducted the same scheme with other area residents, and officers said he stole thousands of pills "for his own use and benefit."

Detectives said they uncovered 12,000 prescription pills during a search of Michaud's home. Police said a large amount of the prescription medication seized from Michaud's home belonged to a deceased person.

Michaud received a bond of $25,000 for burglary, police said, and another $25,000 for engaging in a scheme to defraud.
