PHOENIX --

Department of Public Safety officials said two infants died after a three-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 just before 1 a.m. Sunday morning.

The accident involved two passenger cars and a fully-loaded fuel tanker. Four people, including the two infants, thee weeks and 13 months old, were rushed to local hospitals, Phoenix Fire Department officials said. DPS confirmed the infants did not survive.

The infants' mother and a woman driving the other car were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police. The driver of the tanker was not injured.

Firefighters spent hours Saturday night emptying the 8,000 gallons of fuel from the tanker into another tanker before they could right the truck and open the interstate.

The Department of Public Safety gave this report of the accident:

A silver sedan was driving eastbound on I-10 and slowed to look at another, smaller accident nearby. The driver then swerved in front of a minivan, causing the minivan driver to slam on her brakes.

When the minivan driver hit the brakes, the small car carrying the woman and two infants rear-ended the minivan. The tanker then rear-ended the small car.

The driver in the silver sedan left the scene. Officials were looking for that driver to ask some questions.
