KEN CARYL, Colo. --

A worker who was installing a new safe at the Chase Bank in Ken Caryl was killed Thursday morning when the 3,000-pound steel box fell off a dolly and pinned him against a door.

The 38-year-old worker, whose name was not being released, did not die instantly, said Bill Maron, an investigator with West Metro Fire.

A number of people trapped in the room with him watched helplessly as he suffocated to death.

Because the man was pinned against the only door in the room, no one could get out and firefighters had to cut through two walls to rescue the group, Maron said.

The Chase branch, located at 12482 W. Ken Caryl Avenue, does not have vaults, just safes. The bank was upgrading to a larger safe when the accident happened, Maron said.

The older, smaller safe sat outside the bank, wrapped with police tape, as Jefferson County sheriff's deputies and OSHA agents arrived to investigate the man's death. The smaller safe is 5.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide.

Firefighters said the man works for the safe company, named on the safe as Security and Safe of Colorado. Security and Safe does not have any safety violations with OSHA.
