Fire Destroys Church in Houston

HOUSTON -- A church in northeast Houston has been destroyed by a massive fire Wednesday, KPRC Local 2 reports. The fire started at about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday at the First New Mount Calvary Baptist Church on Gregg and Noble. Firefighters had trouble getting inside because the building had burglary bars. Officials said the fire became so dangerous, firefighters had to evacuate the building and only fight the fire from the outside. Officials said the church is a total loss.

The church was established in 1917 and rebuilt in 1965.
